Knights Fall to Auggies

The MLC Knights fell to the Augsburg Auggies 45-7 at home on Saturday. The Knights were again plagued by penalties, mishandled snaps, and fumbles, as the Auggies would return three Knight fumbles for touchdowns.  The Knights entered the red zone numerous times during the game only to have the drive stalled by penalties or fumbles. The Knights defense played a solid second half giving up only one score on the opening drive.

After a nice opening drive, which included a Carson Oestreich kickoff return to the 45 and a 36-yd. pass to Mason Cox, the Knights missed a field goal attempt. After a few possession changes, Augsburg quickly scored on a 50-yard slant pass for the go-ahead touchdown. Nine seconds later, Augsburg recovered a Knight fumble for a 25-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion pass made it 15-0.

The Knights had another chance  when they recovered a muffed Auggie punt return at the Augsburg 39. After a ten-yard run, Augsburg recovered another Knight fumble, this time taking it 73 yards for the score. After a successful extra point, the score was 22-0 still in the first quarter.

Once again the Knights had a chance when Oestreich ran the ball to the Augsburg 33. A fourth down pass fell incomplete to end the drive.

After a long drive, Adam Arrowsmith and Zach Gregorius sacked the Auggie QB for a large loss, ending their drive. After a Knight three and out, Augsburg made two big plays scoring on a 33-yard run to make it 29-0.

MLC earned a first down, but after a couple of bad snaps and a penalty, the Knights couldn't convert the 3rd and 18 to a first down. Augsburg ended the half on a 42-yard field goal to go in at the midway point leading 32-0.

After receiving the second half kickoff, Augsburg drove the length of the field adding another score to push their lead to 39-0. On the next possession, Augsburg returned yet another Knight fumble for a 29-yard touchdown to lead 45-0.  The Knights mounted a couple of solid drives inside the Augsburg 20, only to self-destruct with mishandled snaps and penalties.

After a solid Knight defensive stand, Nathan Golisch returned an Augsburg punt to the Auggie 28.  A converted fourth down put the Knights inside the ten. A few plays later The Knight put the ball in the endzone on a three-yard touchdown by Rees Roecker to end the scoring at 45-7.

Oestreich finished the game with 88 yards rushing and Roecker added 70 yards. Golisch led the defense with six tackles.
