Watertown, WI - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team got off to a quick start and rode that early momentum all the way to a
60-33 win over Maranatha Baptist on Tuesday.
The Knights shook off their previous blowout loss to UM-Morris and got after it on the defensive end of the court. MLC forced 25 first half turnovers and only allowed 13 points from Maranatha Baptist, with just 3 Sabercat points scored in the second quarter. The press caused many ill-advised passes from the Sabercats and the Knights capitalized on those miscues, taking a 33-13 lead at halftime, despite only shooting 33 percent from the field.
MLC continued that defensive pressure that found them success in the first half and maintained a large double-digit cushion from the Sabercats. MLC would shoot just under 36 percent as a team, but ended up with a season-high in turnovers (39) and allowed their lowest point total (33).
Grace Kieselhorst had her first double-digit scoring performance of the season since November 12th against Lake Forest and finished with 13 points to lead the Knights in scoring. The sophomore guard would foul out at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but had her best all-around game of the season.
Jordyn Heckendorf collected 11 points for MLC and collected four rebounds.
MLC completed the season sweep of Maranatha Baptist and now improve to (8-10, 1-6). The Knights will look to pick up their second UMAC win of the season when they host rival Bethany on Parent's Day at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, January 28th.
