Morris, MN -The Martin Luther College women's soccer team met up with Minnesota Morris for a second time this season on Tuesday afternoon. The two teams ended in a 1-1 draw earlier in September when
Katie Schoeneck connected on a goal in the 84th minute to tie. On Tuesday, the Knights were able to come up with a few more plays than their conference opponent and defeated them
2-0.
MLC got on the scoreboard in the first period just before the 30th minute when
Hailey Rice turned a nice pass from
Jules Koehler into a goal in the lower left side of the net to put the Knights up 1-0.Â
The defense was then asked to step up, especially after senior defender,
Kaitlin Butler, had to leave the game early due to an injury. Minnesota Morris would rattle off 16 shots, but the defense stood their ground and played a part in
Reba Schroeder picking up her fourth shutout of the season.Â
"We used our team speed to our advantage," said head coach
Tyson Zarnstorff. "The defense held up strong and made minimal mistakes to get the job done."
On the offensive side of the ball, MLC passed the ball well and took the open space that was given by the Cougars' defense to make plays.
The other MLC goal came in the 74th minute on an own goal situation and as a team, the Knights had 10 corner kick opportunities to keep the Minnesota Morris defense on their toes.
The win for MLC also put the Knights in a tie for fifth place with Minnesota Morris in the UMAC standings.
The Knights (4-9-2, 3-6-2) will host UW-Superior on Saturday, October 21, with a 1 p.m. start time.
