St. Paul, MN - The Martin Luther College women's team faced Hamline on Tuesday afternoon for another match of the 2023 season. The Pipers would defeat MLC
9-0, but the Knights took three of the six singles matches into a final set tiebreaker, where they'd come up just short in all three of them.
McKenzey Crowley started things off in her number-one singles match, falling to Ashley Pitzen (6-3, 2-6, 0-1).
Charis Glende also gave a notable effort in her number-three match, losing in the third set tiebreaker (2-6, 6-2, 0-1).
Rachel Schoeneck also showed great perseverance coming back from a first set shutout, to win the second set where she eventually lost in the final set tiebreaker (0-6, 6-4, 0-1).
The women would lose the three doubles matches, but had a solid opportunity to take two out of the three, with the team of
Josie Bieberitz/
Charis Glende losing 6-8, while
Katie Kutz and
Abigail Schewe fell 5-8.
Despite the 9-0 loss, the Knights showed substantial improvement and can certainly build upon this performance into future matches. MLC (1-5, 1-1) will head to Gustavus to play a match against Northwestern. The match will be considered a "home" contest and cannot be played on the MLC tennis courts due to the weather.
