Softball Comes Up Short on Day 3 of Spring Break Trip

    Myrtle Beach, SC - The MLC softball team entered day 3 of the South Carolina trip with a pair of wins over Northern Vermont and Albion the previous day. On Sunday, The Knights would fall to Penn State - Altoona 9-1 and then lost a heartbreaker to Blackburn College 7-6.

The Knights would remain in the game through 4 innings, as they were only down 2-1 at that point of the game. The Nittany Lions then scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth inning from a couple of RBI singles and doubles. From there Penn State-Altoona cruised to their 9-1 victory over the Knights.

    MLC would only get 2 hits in the game, but one of them came from SS Lisa Hoffer who homered in the fourth inning for her first long ball of the season. The other hit came from Catcher Olivia Siehr.

Jessica Horn (1-4) picked up the loss for the Knights, but only gave up one earned run in 2 innings pitched. Madison Uhlenbrauck also made an appearance on the mound and threw two strikeouts in 5 innings pitched.

    Blackburn 7, MLC 6

   
In Game 2, MLC played a tightly contested game with Blackburn, as both teams entered the fifth inning tied 3-3. The Knights would take their first lead of the game after scoring 3 runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Beavers answered back with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to edge out the Knights 7-6.

    Hoffer had another solid performance from the plate, going 3-4 with one run scored. Anna Busch went had 2 hits and an RBI, while also providing quality play at third base. The Knights were also very aggressive on the bases, swiping seven. Jordyn Heckendorf and Hannah Ott each ahd two stolen bases on the day.

    Horn allowed 5 runs scored (4 earned) in 6 innings pitched, but Uhlenbrauck (1-2) was credited with the loss after giving up 2 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

    Despite the two losses, MLC (2-6) displayed resiliency and never seemed to be out of either game. The Knights will close out the trip with a pair of games against Bay Path College at 1 p.m. ET and Penn State - Mont Alto at 3 p.m. ET on Monday, March 6.
