New Ulm, MN - The MLC baseball team took a split in their doubleheader on Tuesday, May 2 to Northland College. Game one saw the Knights fall
16-3 in 7 innings, while the second game went in MLC's favor with the
11-5 win.
Northland 16, MLC 3
Both teams got off to a hot start offensively in the first inning as the Lumberjacks put up five in the top half, while the Knights countered with three runs of their own in the bottom half.
Carter Seltz came up with a big two-RBI hit into right field to give MLC some mojo offensively. Unfortunately, that would be the end of the Knights' offensive production for the game as the Lumberjacks' pitcher, Aidan Hernandez, settled into the game and shutout the Knights for the next six innings of play.
The Knights would muster up just two more hits in the game thanks to a pair of singles from
Zach Klement and
Mason Cox.
Seltz would go down for the loss in four innings of work on the mound, but did throw three strikeouts.
MLC 11, Northland 5
Game two started with a leadoff homerun for Northland, as it appeared that the Northland bats had already solved the pitching of
Caleb Carlovsky. However, the sophomore was able to walk away from the inning with just the one run allowed. Carlovsky would get some nice run support in the bottom of the first inning, when
Jackson Lindemann ripped a double into right field to score two runs. The Knights would cap off the inning by scoring six runs and had one of their bigger innings at the plate all season.
The Knights would tack on another three runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend their lead to 9-1. MLCÂ soon added on another run in the third inning to go up 10-1, but the Lumberjacks would respond with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
MLC would get one more insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning after
Jordan Ramirez utilized his speed and scored off a wild pitch. The run gave the Knights an 11-4 advantage, as the relief pitchers for the Knights closed out the remaining innings to give MLC their fourth win on the year.
The win for the Knights give them back to back wins for just the second time this season, with the other consecutive win streak occurring on the Florida spring break trip.
Carlovsky would receive his first career win as a starting pitcher after going 4.1 innings on 5 runs (4 earned), allowing just three hits. The right hander also fanned five Northland batters, keeping the hitters off balance throughout the game.
MLC will now look for a three-game winning streak as they head up to Roseville to face North Central tomorrow, May 3. First pitch is at 5 p.m.
