Lumberjills Slip Past Knights

Ashland, WI - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team lost a close game to the Northland Lumberjills 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. The women had controlled most of the game, but couldn't capitalize on the chances they had near the net.

Both teams got off to a quick start offensively and the Knights took advantage of an own goal scored at the 6:12 mark, while the Lumberjills responded from their defensive blunder with a goal to tie it up 1-1 with just 13:35 minutes played.

Katie Schoeneck would break that tie soon after the Northland goal at the 14:55 mark, with Hailey Rice on the assist.

After a scoreless stretch of almost 30 minutes, the Lumberjills would tie the game up once more at 2-2, when they scored at the 42:15 mark.

The two squads buckled down defensively to in the first 25 minutes of action in the second period, but MLC would give up the game winning goal to Norah Green with 15 minutes remaining.

MLC will possibly get goalkeeper, Rebekah Schroeder back next week, but Karissa Holdcroft had another solid effort in her place.

Overall, the Knights had multiple defensive breakdowns which led to the three Northland goals, but MLC once again had the opportunities at the net and had a lopsided 19-2 advantage in shots on goal over the Lumberjills.

As the season moves forward, the Knights will surely look to turn those chances into goals and hope to do so quick as they face Bethany in a home contest on Tuesday, September 19 at 4:30 p.m.
