MLC Ties Bethany 1-1 in Tightly Contested Game

New Ulm, MN - The MLC women's soccer team gave Bethany Lutheran all they could handle in Tuesday's game, tying the Vikings 1-1 in a close UMAC contest between two rival schools.

In the first period, both teams held the ball for nearly the same amount of time and the Knights had their best scoring chances in the first 45 minutes of action. As a result, Rachel Schoeneck scored her third goal of the season on a pass from her sister, Katie Schoeneck at the 15:20 mark. The goal put the Knights up 1-0 and sparked a lot of confidence in the unit.

In the second period, Bethany ramped up their aggressive play and threatened to score on numerous occasions, but the MLC defense and Maria Vik made countless saves and deflections to keep MLC in the lead for about 20 minutes of play.

However, the Vikings eventually broke through with a score and evened things up when Elena Lujan Rubio scored at the 65th minute. From there, the Knights' defense kept Bethany in check and prevented a go-ahead score from the Vikings and the result ended in a 1-1 tie.

Although it wasn't a win, MLC played one of its better games of the season and the defense provided a lot of support for Vik who finished with 12 saves. Bethany got off 38 shots (13 on goal), while MLC had 10 shots (7 on target), as Rachel Scheoenck led with three on net.

MLC (4-8-2, 2-4-1) will look to take a split against Crown College on Saturday, as the two schools gear up to play at 3:30 p.m. in New Ulm.
