New Ulm, MN - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team displayed a solid defensive effort in their Wednesday matchup versus Northwestern. The Knights held the Eagles scoreless for nearly 80 minutes until they converted on a couple of goals late to beat MLC
2-0.
Northwestern had opportunities to score, but the MLC defense did a solid job of taking away their looks whenever they were threatening. Still, the Eagles managed to get off 25 shots (13 on goal), but goalkeeper
Nicholas Russ made some difficult saves all game long and finished with 11 stops.
Northwestern broke the scoreless tie in the 77th minute following a free kick that was given to them off of an MLC yellow card. The Eagles penetrated towards the goal and Nathan Martinez scored on a header from a pass by Aaron Hill. Northwestern added an insurance goal near the 88th minute when Hill found the back of the net to end the contest officially.
The Knights' offense had a few opportunities, especially in the second period, but could not capitalize. MLC finished with eight shots (2 on goal) as
Abraham Schlomer and
Owen Heiman each had a shot on target.
MLC (2-8-1, 1-4) will have another home contest with UW-Superior on Saturday, October 5, at 4:30 p.m.
