UNW Defeats MLC on the Road

St. Paul, MN - The MLC baseball team played their first road series of conference play on Friday April 5 and Saturday, April 6 against the Northwestern Eagles. In Friday's game, the Knights managed to take a 2-0 lead through three frames, following an RBI single from Parker Winghart in the top of the third. However, the Eagles' offense got going starting in the bottom of the third inning and posted three runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning.

Andrew Simon was on the hill for Northwestern and gave up two runs in eight innings of work on the mound, while also tossing five strikeouts.

A Ben Hixon grand slam in the bottom of the first inning helped the Eagles go up 6-0 early on in the morning game on Saturday. Northwestern followed up the big inning with some more damage in the next couple of frames and went up 10-1 through three innings.

Another grand slam by the Eagles, proved to be the dagger in this one, as Mark Bligh homered to left field in the bottom of the fifth. Despite the big deficit, MLC never gave up playing and strung together four runs in the top of the seventh off of some wild pitches.

The MLC offense was led by Carter Seltz, who had a team-high two RBI, while Winghart paced the team with three base hits.

Bligh picked up where he left off in the final game of the series and produced an RBI triple in the first inning. The Australian then drove in another run in the bottom of the third, with an RBI single to center field.

From there, Bligh and the Eagles maintained the shutout into the top of the eighth, until the Knights scored four runs. Winghart hit a two-run double through the right side and Spencer Lilienthal brought in the other two MLC runs with his single to right field. Despite the offensive surge, the Northwestern bullpen recorded the final three outs in the top of the ninth and held on for the three-game sweep.

MLC (3-18, 0-8) will look for their first conference win when they go on the road to play Minnesota Morris for a three-game series, starting on Friday, April 12. The first pitch of the series will start at 3 p.m.
