New Ulm, MN - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team came out victorious in their standalone game against Minnesota Morris, defeating the Cougars
1-0.
Katie Schoeneck's penalty kick goal around the 26th minute of the first period proved to be the deciding factor in the Knights' second win of the season.
The game didn't count toward the UMAC standings even though it was a meeting between two conference schools. The game replaced MLC's initial matchup with Northland College as the Lumberjills do not have a team this year.
The first period saw both schools with an even amount of ball possession with the Knights (51%) gaining the advantage narrowly over the Cougars (49%) in that statistical area of the game. Each team also got off 12 shots in the first 45 minutes with the Knights taking the 1-0 lead into the break.
Minnesota Morris had their chances to tie up the game as they recorded seven shots on target in the second period. Still, the MLC defense and goalkeeper
Maria Vik held their ground and held off any comeback threat.
MLC also had opportunities to extend their lead late into the game but still managed to come away with the home win. The Cougars had a 15-8 edge in shots on target for the game, but the Knights got off more total shots (26-21). The Schoeneck sisters (Katie and Rachel) paced MLC in shots with eight apiece.
Vik finished with her second career shutout in the win and recorded 13 saves for the Knights.
MLC (2-2-1) will be in action again this weekend for the final game of their non-conference slate as they play Ripon on the road on Saturday, September 14, at 1 p.m.
