New Ulm, MN - The Martin Luther College men's basketball team was defeated
91-62 in their afternoon home contest against UW-Superior.
The Yellowjackets came to play on Saturday and set the tone of the game on the defensive end of the court early on in the first half. UW-Superior's backcourt was relentless in its defensive pressure and disrupted the Knights' flow and timing of their half-court offense. As a result, the Yellowjackets forced 24 MLC turnovers and got out in transition on various steals throughout the game. UW-Superior scored 25 points in fastbreak opportunities and 35 from turnovers.
MLC still played hard and stayed in the game at halftime, down 45-34. The Knights shot well from the floor in the first half (46.2 percent), but a 14-2 run by UW-Superior to start the second half swayed the game in favor of the Yellowjackets and they would never look back.
J'Vaun Walker did a little of everything as UW-Superior's point guard, leading his team in assists (5) and rebounds (6) to go along with his 16 points. Reid Johnson led the Yellowjackets with 18 points, while shooting 64 percent in the game.
Despite the loss, MLC had three players in double figures as
Adam Loberger led the Knights' squad once again in scoring (18 points, 8 rebounds). Guards
Thomas Balge (13 points) and
Benjamin Vasold (10 points) were the other two from MLC.
MLC (4-8, 1-3) will switch gears back to nonconference play on Monday, January 20, when they go to Carleton College for a 7 p.m. game.
