New Ulm, MN - The Martin Luther College women's basketball squad added another win to their season by beating UW-Superior
60-52 on Saturday. With the win, the Knights remain undefeated at home (7-0) and in UMAC play (4-0) and sit atop the conference standings after a gritty victory over the Yellowjackets.
The game was closely contested throughout the 40 minutes of competition and featured three ties, but the Knights never relinquished the lead for the entire game.Â
While the first quarter saw more offense, the defensive intensity was ratcheted up in the second and third periods with neither team shooting over 30 percent.
The game started to pick up again offensively in the fourth quarter as
Ava Stein and
Anna Kieselhorst hit consecutive 3-pointers to give MLC a jolt of energy, going up 49-41 following the shots. UW-Superior answered with five points of their own to cut it to 49-46, but
Mya Morris made another critical basket near the hoop to give the Knights a 51-46 lead with 2:22 remaining. Morris then nailed a vital shot from beyond the arc with 1:47 left to put the Knights up 54-46 and that would seal the deal in favor of MLC.
Morris put up 22 points, five rebounds, and three steals and the transfer guard made four 3-pointers for MLC. Stein made big plays, especially near the basket, and had one of the better performances of her freshman campaign, finishing with 15 points, eight boards, and two steals.
Overall, the Knights played another solid game defensively holding the Yellowjackets to just under 34 percent shooting and only 18 percent from deep. MLC also hit their free throws in this one, making 13-of-16 attempts (81 percent).
MLC moves to 10-4 overall, 4-0 UMAC, and will head to Mankato on Wednesday, January 22, to face Bethany at 7:15 p.m.Â
