New Ulm, MN - The MLC women's basketball team entered Wednesday's contest winning the past two games and were in a good position to make it three in a row when they were tied 32-32 at halftime with Hamline at home. Towards the end of the third quarter, heading into the fourth, the Pipers then went on a 13-3 run and took the game
77-61.
The Hamline defensive pressure was a factor in the outcome, as the Pipers were relentless on the court, doubling and trapping MLC players, which made it difficult for the Knights to get off their best shots at times. MLC did find some success offensively in the second quarter, though, as they boosted their shooting percentage to almost .54.
Hamline made five 3-pointers in the third quarter off of solid ball movement in the half-court, giving them a 53-47 lead through three quarters after the Knights kept it within four points for most of the period.
The Pipers scored nearly half of its points in the paint (36) and had balanced contributions from multiple players, with five reaching double figures.
Ava Stein was the leading scorer for MLC, finishing with 17 points on 78 percent shooting.
Wilhelmina Wenz added 14 points off four made 3-pointers. The sophomore also eight rebounds and two steals.
MLC will now head to Watertown, Wisconsin, for an away game at Maranatha Baptist on Friday, November 21, at 2:30 p.m.
