Courtney breaks loose, leads Crown over MLC

St. Bonifacius, MN - The MLC football team played a road game at Crown on a cold and dreary day in Minnesota. The Knights battled hard throughout four quarters, but the Polars and Jamarrius Courtney defeated MLC 34-21 to complete the season sweep of MLC.

The Polars previously beat MLC 17-7 at home back in October, and the quarterback-run game played a factor in that decision. On Saturday, Courtney broke loose for 242 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries behind the center.

It took almost all of the opening quarter for either team to score as Courtney's 71-yard touchdown scamper set the stage for the Polars offensively. The MLC defense forced a punt from Crown on their next drive, which then led to the Knights putting together their first touchdown of the contest on a 7-yard pass play from Brady Turriff to Jude Pederson.

From there, the MLC defense didn't allow Crown to sniff the endzone, and both teams entered the break tied 7-7.

The start of the second half saw a quick strike from the Polars as Courtney pulled off another long touchdown run of 66 yards to put his team back up 14-7. However, MLC had another answer to the Polars as Turriff connected with Pederson on the ensuing drive, with the Knights scoring on an 8-play, 75-yard drive with 11:35 remaining in the third quarter.

Just as MLC got back into it, Crown then shifted the momentum by scoring 20 unanswered points over the next nine minutes of play. An interception and a couple of Courtney touchdown runs jump-started their double-digit lead.

MLC was still able to find some success on offense and reached the endzone once more near the end of the fourth quarter when Arthur Robinson ran in from the 1-yard line.

Turriff tossed for 217 yards and two touchdowns while his top target of the day was Pederson, who caught nine passes for 122 yards and a pair of TDs. Robinson was a workhorse in the backfield, rushing 33 times for 91 yards and a touchdown.

Ethan Melso paced the MLC defense with 10 tackles, and Tom Balge returned from injury to record eight tackles. Micah Koschnitzke, Jesus (Chuy) Medina, and Nathan Schmidt each made five stops.

MLC will play its final game of the season against Minnesota Morris in New Ulm next Saturday, November 15, at 1 p.m.
