Softball Begins Spring Break Trip, Falls to Penn State Schools

Little River, SC - The Martin Luther College softball team began their annual spring break trip to the Myrtle Beach area with a pair of contests against Penn State schools. The first game featured an early 9 a.m. matchup with Penn State - Mont Alto, where the Knights lost 9-1. The later game would be played on the same field of the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex, but Penn State - Abington defeated MLC 4-0.

Game 1 Penn State - Mont Alto 9, MLC 1 (5 innings)

Senior Jess Horn got the start in game one and got out of a bottom-of-the-first-inning jam after preventing the Nittany Lions from scoring after runners were on second and third base with one out.

However, Mont Alto cracked the scoring column with four runs in the bottom of the second inning on a pair of singles and found themselves up 4-0 at that point.

From there, MLC answered with a run in the top of the third when Chloe Berg knocked in her first run of the season on a ball that dropped fair down the left field line, bringing in Anna Busch from second base.

Mont Alto would keep the Knights scoreless from there though, as the Nittany Lions added on five more runs to make it 9-1, resulting in the game ending in the fifth inning due to the 8-run rule.

Despite the loss, MLC recorded five hits from five different players, but Mont Alto's starting pitcher MacKenzie Stake made it out with just one run allowed.

Game 2 Penn State - Abington 4, MLC 0

Aside from a four-run second inning, Horn kept Abington in check in the game two. The senior gave up a season-low four runs (0 earned) and went 6.1 innings, with freshman Ava Schroeder recording the final two outs in the seventh.

However, Abington's pitching held the Knights to two base hits, with Jess Dinardo striking out six MLC batters.

The Knights played well behind Horn in the field, committing only one error defensively, as Katelyn Rassat threw five assists at shortstop.

MLC (0-6) continues their time down in South Carolina with a couple of games against UMass Boston and Maine - Farmington on Saturday, March 15, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
