Auburndale, FL - The Martin Luther College baseball team continued their high offensive numbers against Alfred University (NY) and left no doubt in either of their doubleheader sweep on Saturday, defeating the Saxons
13-2 in game one and
20-10 in the evening contest.
Game 1 MLC 13, Alfred 2
The Saxons would score one of their two runs to start game one, but the Knights had a quick answer and strung together a 5-run bottom of the second, highlighted by an RBI single from
Parker Winghart that drove in two runs.
MLC kept it going from there, as they scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth, including a pair of doubles by
Ethan Melso and Winghart, while
Jordan Ramirez brought in two runs on his RBI single to left center.
Carlos Walta got the nod on the mound and pitched six innings, allowing two runs (2 earned) with six K's.
Ramirez led the team in runs (3) and tied in RBI (3) along with Winghart.
John Westendorf and Melso knocked in two RBI apiece.
Game 2 MLC 20, Alfred 10
MLC picked up where they left off in game one and did their damage mostly with two monster innings, scoring eight runs in the top of the third and seventh frames.
The Knights spread the wealth up and down the lineup as seven players recorded a hit, while six MLC batters finished with multi-RBI games.
Carter Seltz got going at the plate and had a game-high in hits (4), runs (4), and swiped two bases.
Alex Ritter batted leadoff and led with three RBI, while also scoring two runs.
Winghart, Ramirez,
Jackson Anderson, Aidan Berg, and Westendorf collected two RBI games. Winghart and Ramirez also rounded the bases three times.
Samuel Rodriguez earned his first win of the season as the MLC starting pitcher, giving up two runs (1 earned) in four innings of work. Additionally, the senior struck out three Alfred hitters.
MLC moves to 5-2 overall on the season and has a day off on their Florida trip, before getting back to work for a doubleheader on Monday, March 17, against Saint John's (MN) at 3 and 5:30 p.m.
