Baseball falls to UW-Superior in Thursday's doubleheader

Superior, WI - The MLC baseball team had a chance to take a game of its 3-game series with UW-Superior, when they played the final two games earlier today. The Knights had the lead mid-way through in both contests, but the Yellowjackets battled back in each to defeat MLC 9-4 in game 2 and 14-5 in game 3.

Game 2 UW-Superior 9, MLC 4

MLC opened up the first game of Thursday with a run in the top of the first. From there, the Knights held the lead 1-0 heading into the fifth frame as there was a pitcher's duel between Jackson Anderson and Zach Romans. Parker Winghart drove in Ethan Melso on a single to centerfield to make it 2-0, but the Knights' lead would soon go away when the Yellowjackets answered back with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth.

The score was 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, and then a Payton Steiner 3-run home run to left field put the game out of reach for MLC with UW-Superior pushing across five runs in the inning.

MLC did get two more runs in the top of the eighth, but it wouldn't be enough as the Yellowjackets took game 2.

Carter Seltz and Winghart finished with two hits and an RBI to lead the MLC lineup.

Game 3 UW-Superior 14, MLC 5

MLC got off to another quick start in the final matchup of the series with Carlos Walta and Seltz getting the Knights' two runs in the top of the first to go up 2-0. UW-Superior added a run in the second and fourth innings to even it up 2-2, but the Knights had another solution at the plate when Winghart knocked a 2-run double to left field. Additionally, MLC added one more run at the top of the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.

UW-Superior added a run in the bottom of the fifth and then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take their first lead of the game (7-5). Once again, the Yellowjackets hit a big fly to separate themselves from MLC, with this one coming from Trey Sybrant in the seventh.

Alex Ritter and John Westendorf led MLC with two hits apiece at the top of the lineup, while Winghart and Walta had the most RBI (2).
