Minneapolis, MN—The Martin Luther College softball team concluded their opening weekend play with a doubleheader against the host school Augsburg. The Auggies defeated the Knights in both contests in five innings, beating MLC
9-1 in game one and
10-0 in game two.
Game 1 Augsburg 9, MLC 1
Despite the loss, MLC recorded their first hit and run of the season, as
Jess Horn manufactured a run on a sacrifice bunt, bringing in
Sarah Yonkovich from third base. MLC cut it to 2-1 in the third inning, but Augsburg posted a five-run bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach, which included a three-run homer from Torrie Rehder.
Defensively, MLC was led by
Katelyn Rassat (4 assists) at shortstop and
Chloe Berg at first base, who finished with six putouts.
Game 2 Augsburg 10, MLC 0
In the later contest of the day, MLC got a little bit more going at the plate, finishing with four hits as a team. However, the Auggies had another strong effort on offense and produced seven extra-base hits, including another big fly from Rehder, while Grace Syson had a three RBI game.
Augsburg scored eight of their 10 runs in the top of the third on seven hits.
Horn and
Anna Busch each totaled three assists to pace the Knights, while Berg recorded the most putouts with eight.
MLC (0-4) will be back on the diamond next week down in Little River, South Carolina just outside of Myrtle Beach for their annual spring break trip. There, the Knights will take on eight different schools from the East Coast, with the first game being against Penn State Mont Alto at 9 a.m. on Friday, March 14.
