Baseball Earns 1st Conference Win After Taking Game 3 of Series at North Central

Maple Grove, MN - MLC baseball wrapped up its series against North Central with a doubleheader full of runs as the bats got going on both sides once again. MLC would be unable to hold onto their lead in the late innings of game two as the Rams won 13- 9, but the Knights came back strong to win game three 8-5.

NCU 13, MLC 9

MLC took a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, with the Rams cutting it to 3-2 with a run in that inning. Sam Rodriguez then belted a solo homer to give the Knights a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh. However, the MLC lead would soon go away as North Central posted 11 runs in the ensuing two innings to ultimately swing the game in their favor.

MLC outhit NCU 16-10 and outplayed the Rams for most of the game, but North Central received a major boost from Brett Letness, who recorded a team-high five RBI.

Carlos Walta led MLC with four hits, while driving in two runs. Parker Winghart delivered two runs, hits, and RBI, while also being patient at the plate, drawing four walks.

Mark Vogel and John Westendorf also scored two runs apiece. Despite giving up seven runs (6 earned), Aidan Berg threw nine career-high strikeouts in seven innings of work on the mound.

MLC 8, NCU 5

MLC flipped the result in game three of the series by coming up with a much-needed big inning to ensure themselves a victory. The Knights held leads in the first two games of the series before NCU fought back to win. However, MLC picked up their first conference win thanks in large part to a six-run top of the sixth.

The middle of the order heated up for MLC as Walta smacked an RBI double down the right field line, and the Knights felt the momentum even further when Rodriguez hit his second home run of the series with a big fly to left center field.

With that inning, MLC took an 8-1 advantage, and even though the Rams put up four more runs following that point, the Knights held on to win 8-5.

Carter Seltz earned his first win of the season on the mound and pitched 7.1 innings, giving up just three runs (3 earned). Seltz also helped his case at the plate with a team-high three RBI, while Rodriguez finished with two RBI on his homer. Westendorf scored the most runs (2) from the leadoff spot.

MLC (7-21, 1-14) will now have nearly a week off before their next series, which will be played at Crown College on Friday, April 25, at 6 p.m.
