Knights held by Vikings

NEW ULM, Minn. - MLC women's soccer suffered yet another slow start on Wednesday afternoon. This time, it cost them a pair of points in UMAC play, drawing Bethany Lutheran College 1-1.

The Vikings scored just 42 seconds into the match after a scum ensued in front of the Knights' goal. Riley Ping poked the ball into the net, giving Bethany a 1-0 lead. It is the third-straight match that the Knights have surrendered the first goal. In the previous two matches, MLC responded by dominating the play.

Bethany held that lead until the 55th minute when Sydney Buch scored in her second-straight match. The goal came after Allison Olson had her penalty kick saved, Heather Wendt then saw her shot batted away to Buch, who finished to the bottom corner.

Both teams had opportunities to win it late. MLC's Katie Schoeneck burst through the defense in the 80th minute, but pulled her shot inches wide of the right post. Bethany's Roxy Rehberg hit a shot with about 50 seconds left that was heading into the top-right corner until Maria Vik dove and batted it away. Vik finished with 12 saves.

Bethany edged out MLC in shots (23-19), shots on goal (13-9) and corner kicks (6-5).
