MLC football welcomes Westminster to the Bowl

NEW ULM, Minn. - MLC tries to run its winning streak to three games as it welcomes Westminster to the Bowl on Saturday.

Inside the Matchup
MLC has a 12-10 record vs. Westminster since 2002, which includes a two-game winning streak against the Blue Jays.

In last year's matchup, MLC won 38-28. Brady Turriff threw for 364 yards and 4 TDs. Two of those went to Jude Pederson, who had 168 yards receiving. Arthur Robinson also had a nice day on the ground, rushing for 145 yards.

Jasper Lawrenz had the impact play of the game with a 55-yard pick-six.

Two in a Row
After losing close games to Crown and Northwestern and a blowout loss to Greenville, MLC has finally found a way to get over the hump in close games the past two weeks.

The Knights had sizable leads disappear against both Minnesota Morris, where they saw a 21-7 lead turn into a 21-21 tie in the fourth quarter, and Crown, who nearly erased a 30-point deficit last week. In both of those games, MLC found a way to make the critical plays that had been lacking earlier in the season, resulting in a pair of wins.

Last week, the defense forced a Crown interception and a turnover on downs on back-to-back possessions to ice the game for the offense that had struggled to move the ball in the fourth quarter. Against Morris, it was the offense that marched on a 70-yard go-ahead drive in the final minutes.

Nearly a Record-Setting Barrage
The game against Crown saw Brady Turriff set a new career passing yardage record at 5,933 yards. Turriff and teammate Noah Huebner both flirted with multiple single game records as well.

Turriff finished 35 yards short of Luke Rothe's single-game yardage record of 399 and one touchdown shy of Greg Holzhueter's 5-TD game against Blackburn in 2007.

Huebner was 45 yards away from Josh Arndt's single-game receiving yardage record of 222 yards, which he did against Minnesota Morris in 2018. Huebner was also one TD away from matching Ryan Kolander, who had 4 against Maranatha Baptist in 2009.

Westminster in the UMAC
Westminster provides one of the toughest tests of the year on paper for the Knights. The Blue Jays boast the UMAC's top scoring offense (31.3 ppg) and defense (17 ppg allowed) as well as the best offense (340.1) and defense (244.1) in terms of yardage.

Martez Stephenson is statistically by far the best back in the UMAC this season, averaging 8.6 yards per carry, 152.1 yards per game, totaling 1,065 yards already this season. MLC's Arthur Robinson is second at just 574 yards. Stephenson has also scored 12 TDs.

Despite Stephenson's proficiency, Westminster is not one dimensional, for they've also thrown for 1,236 yards with quarterback Trey Thomas. Thomas' top targets are Cole Harrell, who has 361 yards and 4 TDs, and Jeremiah Thomas, who has 243 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensively, Kadyn Burleson has been a major disruptive force for Westminster, recording 11 tackles for loss and 3. 5 sacks. Teammate Ethan Paulat also has 5.5 tackles for loss.

The Blue Jays have also shown the ability to take the ball away. Defensive back Justin Parker leads the UMAC with 4 interceptions and Martin Andrew is tied for second with 2. Matthew Wiegand has forced two fumbles and recovered three this season.
