WINTHROP, Minn. - The MLC men's cross country team is UMAC champions for the first time since 2008. That same year was also the last time MLC had an individual champion in Nathan Loersch. On Saturday, freshman
Logan Korthals joined that club of UMAC individual champions.
The Knights knocked off preseason favorites UW-Superior by five places with a team score of 34. MLC had all five counting runners finish inside the top 13, including four runners inside the top 10. All five counting runners also ran career-best times.
Korthals nearly set a new record time for the UMAC Championship and also ran the second-fastest time in program history with a 25:47.9. His time was about four seconds slower than the conference meet record and is second in program history to only Doug Gurgel's time of 25:41 back in 1994.
Behind Korthals,
Silas Ebeling and
Eliott Heiderich finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Ebeling ran in 26:18.3 and Heiderich finished in 26:41.5.
Two more freshmen rounded out MLC's lineup in
Thomas Moldenhauer and
Andrew Holz. Moldenhauer finished in ninth place with a time of 27:14.7 and Holz was 13th in 28:04.9.
