New Ulm, MN - The MLC women's basketball team entered today's contest with UW-Superior in fourth place in the UMAC standings. The Knights gave another hard-working performance on Parents' Day, but MLC was unable to get into a rhythm offensively and fell
59-42 to the Yellowjackets.
MLC was held to 26 percent shooting in the first half as UW-Superior took a 31-15 lead at halftime. The Yellowjackets had a hot second quarter from the field (63.6 percent) and collected five points within the final seconds of the half after knocking down a 3-pointer off of a missed free throw by Kyler Hewitt, who hit an and-one layup just before.
The Knights outscored UW-Superior in the third quarter 13-11, but still trailed 42-28 through three periods. The Yellowjackets earned contributions from its bench, outscoring MLC in that area 18-5. Over half of UW-Superior's points came in the paint as well, with the Yellowjackets holding a 32-18 advantage there.
Despite the loss, MLC did a nice job of creating turnovers with its defense, forcing 21 miscues of UW-Superior.
Anna Kieselhorst finished with a game-high 18 points and snagged two steals.
Wilhelmina Wenz led the Knights with three steals, while
Ava Stein also had two.
MLC will look to regroup when they go on the road to play Crown on Wednesday, February 11, at 5:30 p.m.
