Auburndale, FL - MLC baseball took game one of its doubleheader against Gordon College (MA)
5-4 to start day two in Florida. The Fighting Scots defeated the Knights in game two,
14-2.
Game 1 MLC 5, Gordon 4
MLC received a nice outing from freshman
Owen Proctor, who recorded his second collegiate win in as many starts. Gordon took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first when the game began with a couple of errors from the MLC defense.
Gordon tacked on one more run in the second. MLC trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the second frame and chipped away at the deficit with a sacrifice fly RBI from
Mark Vogel and an RBI ground out by
Parker Winghart in the third.
The Knights tied it 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs in the inning.
Michel Krebs smoked a double to left field, scoring fellow freshman
Evan Kasa, who pinch ran. Vogel later singled to center field to bring in Krebs.
MLC picked up a big contribution from another freshman in the bottom of the sixth when
Micah Herbst broke the 4-4 tie with a solo home run to left field. Up 5-4 in the top of the seventh, Proctor had a three-up three-down inning to top the Fighting Scots.Â
Proctor pitched a complete game (7 innings), allowing four runs (1 earned) on only four hits. Vogel led MLC in RBI (2), while Krebs and
John Westendorf each finished with two hits.
Game 2 Gordon 14, MLC 2
In the later game, Gordon's double-digit victory came primarily due to a 7-run bottom of the fourth frame. Gordon outhit MLC 10-2, and the MLC runs were scored in the sixth and seventh innings.Â
Logan Gray-Ives walked in a run, while
Nathan Vance and
Jackson Anderson put on a double steal for the Knights. MLC had many base runners in the contest, drawing 11 walks, but also left 11 players on base.
After the split, MLC will play Blackburn College in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 11, starting at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time.
