Roseville, MN - MLC softball took on UW-Superior in a 3-game series this weekend, with the two schools playing on Northwestern's field. UW-Superior defeated MLC
6-3 on Friday, and the Yellowjackets completed the sweep with victories over the Knights in game two,
7-4, and game three,
24-4.
Game 1 UW-Superior 6, MLC 3
UW-Superior held a 5-0 lead through five innings of play on the diamond on Friday. However, MLC didn't give up and made some noise with the bats in the top of the sixth inning putting across three runs.
Chloe Berg came up with a big hit on a 2-run double that was driven into left-center field.
Kaylee Pickering and
Sarah Yonkovich scored on the play.
Kieghtan Rank helped her cause with an RBI single up the middle, bringing in Berg. The Knights made it 5-3 with some momentum, but the Yellowjackets would respond with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to add a little more separation and ultimately the win.
Rank and
Kiara Humann led the Knights with two hits apiece. Rank allowed five runs in six innings, but had UW-Superior second-guessing on a lot of pitches, striking out eight batters.
Game 2 UW-Superior 7, MLC 4
MLC started game two on Saturday with a run in the top of the first frame. However, the Yellowjackets would take a 2-1 lead after a 2-run homer in the bottom half of the inning.
UW-Superior put up four runs in the second then to go up 6-2. Down 7-2 in the top of the sixth, MLC managed to add on two more runs when
Rachel McCaughna hit an RBI single to center field. The other run came from a double steal which brought in
Emily Laupichler.
MLC actually outhit UW-Superior 9-4, but the Yellowjackets were patient at the plate, drawing a total of eight walks.
Game 3 UW-Superior 24, MLC 4
In game three, UW-Superior took advantage at the plate again, reaching base 20 times on walks thrown by the MLC pitchers. UW-Superior scored 14 runs in the first inning to put the game out of reach.
Chloe Koschnitzke recorded a team high in hits (3) and RBI (3). Despite a tough loss in the final game of the series, MLC challenged UW-Superior in the first contests.
MLC will host their first home series of the season on Friday, April 17, when Minnesota Morris comes to play at 4:30 p.m.
