Men's soccer comes from behind to beat BVU

STORM LAKE, Iowa - MLC men's soccer got its season off to a winning start on Tuesday night with a 2-1 win on the road against Buena Vista.

The Knights fell behind after just 6:14 when Beavers forward Jeramiah Rediske scored. That was one of seven shots attempted by BVU in the first 30 minutes.

"[We] gave up the one goal, but then weathered the storm, made some connections in the middle of the field and started to feel more comfortable in possession," coach Nick Schmoller said.

That resulted in more opportunities for the Knights as the half wore on, culminating in a Silas Gawrisch goal in the 38th minute after Jonah Uhlenbrauck turned the Beavers over in their defensive part of the field.

MLC continued to gain momentum throughout the second half. The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute when Joshua Krenke earned a corner kick on a shot that was saved.

Freshman Gabriel Habeck crossed in the ensuing corner kick, which Krenke finished at the back post, giving MLC its first lead.

The Knights earned the win despite being outshot 13-5. Schmoller credited goalkeeper Nicholas Russ as well as defenders Matthew Nelson and Noah Walta. Nelson played 90 minutes through the heat and humidity.

"The defense played very well together," Schmoller said. "Nick had some huge saves."
