MANKATO, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's tennis team clinched third place in the final UMAC standings with a 7-2 win at Bethany Lutheran College on Mnoday.
The Knights started strong, winning two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead. The number one team of
Acacia Foss and
Rachel Riediger won their match 8-2, and the number three team of
Sophia Birner and
Elizabeth Broring scored the other point with an 8-6 win.
Needing only three wins in singles play to secure the team victory, the Knights won five of six. Foss, Riediger and Charis Goelzer each won in straight sets in the top three positions in the line-up, while Broring and Birner also added wins.
MLC entered this match needing a win either Monday or Tuesday against BLC to secure third place in the final standings, which comes with the number three seed in this weekend's UMAC Championships.
The Knights improved to 5-10 overall and 5-4 in UMAC play with the win. BLC fell to 4-17 on the season and 3-6 in UMAC play in defeat.
These two teams will close the regular season with another meeting tomorrow (Tuesday, May 3) at MLC. That match is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
