NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team swept UW-Superior 3-0 on Saturday by the scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-16.
The match was named the UMAC Game of the Week, and was the conference opener for both teams. Both teams were also coming off five-set matches on Friday night. MLC overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat St. Catherine 3-2 on Friday, while UWS lost in five sets at Bethany Lutheran.
The Knights jumped to a commanding lead in the first set and never looked back on the way to a 1-0 lead in the match.
Jade St. Germaine,
Kira Grev and
Rylee Weisensel combined for ten kills in that game to lead the way.
The Yellowjackets fought back in a competitive second set that saw 13 ties before the Knights took control with a late run to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
MLC dominated the third set from start to finish, limiting the UWS attack thanks to six blocks (five from first-year middle hitter
Ruth Buchholz) on the way to the sweep.
The Knights hit .218 in the match. Grev led the charge with a .400 attack percentage and 11 kills, while St. Germaine finished with 13 kills.
Emily Neeb led the team with 14 digs, while
Emily Byhardt finished with 21 assists.
MLC improved its record to 6-11 on the season and 1-0 in UMAC play with the win. UWS fell to 4-14 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, September 27, when they travel to Bethany Lutheran for a match scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
