Volleyball Drops Two at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team dropped both its matches Saturday at a tournament hosted by Carleton and St. Olaf. The Knights lost the opener 3-1 (25-14, 25-13, 20-25, 25-15) to Carleton before losing the night cap 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-10) against Hamline.

Carleton 3, Martin Luther 1 (25-14, 25-13, 20-25, 25-15)

MLC won its first set of the season, but was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 3-1 loss to Carleton.

The Knights fell behind early 2-0, but battled to win the third set 25-20. The Knights hit .219 in that set, while holding Carleton to .033 on the attack.

That would be as far as MLC could push the match, however, as Carleton was able to win the fourth and final set to secure the win.

Ruth Buchholz led MLC with 11 kills and hit .409 for the match. Kelsey Birschbach added 10 kills and hit .389, while Jewel St. Germaine set a career-best with 23 assists. Katelyn Aswege also set a new personal best with 17 digs for the Knights.

Hamline 3, Martin Luther 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-10)

The Knights closed the two-day tournament with a 3-0 sweep at the hands of the Pipers from Hamline University.

The Pipers hit .352 for the match and finished with 41 total kills on the way to the win. MLC hit .133.

Buchholz continued her strong performance from the morning session with 11 kills and an attack percentage of .846 for the match. St. Germaine added 13 assists and six digs, while Aswege record a team-high 10 digs.

MLC fell to 0-4 on the season in defeat, and will return to action on Tuesday (September 4) when it hosts Buena Vista. That match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
