Knights Drop Close Contest at Holy Family

MANITOWOC, Wis. - The Martin Luther College women's basketball team was unable to complete a second-half comeback in a 68-65 loss at Holy Family College on Friday.

The Knights started slow, trailing 14-10 after the first quarter and 30-24 at halftime, but pulled to within three points heading into the final period. 

The Lakers pushed the lead back into double digits early in the fourth quarter, but a Cassandra Rose three-point play tied the game 64-64 with just over one minute to play.

In the final minute, Holy Family went 4-4 from the free throw line and held a three-point advantage in the final seconds before holding off one last MLC attempt to secure the win.

MLC struggled from the field, shooting 29.9 percent overall, but was able to hang in the game thanks to 9-25 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. The Lakers shot 36.2 percent overall, and finished with an advantage at the free throw line, where they outscored the Knights 23-16.

Emily Witkowski led MLC with 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Ally Platzer added 14 points, while Rose finished with 12 points.

MLC fell to 0-6 on the season in defeat. Holy Family improved to 1-5 with the win.

The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, November 23) when they travel to Mount Mary for a game scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
