River Falls, WI - The Martin Luther College volleyball team concluded their weekend tournament at UW-River Falls, with a doubleheader match against Simpson and Saint Benedict. Both matches ended in a 3-0 sweep of the Knights.
Simpson 3, MLC 0
The first match of Saturday began at 11 a.m. against Simpson and the Knights hung in tough to make it a one point difference (19-18), following a service ace by
Abigail Winkel. However, the Storm would respond with five consecutive points and made it 23-18 on the way to their first set win.
In the second set, Simpson would separate themselves from MLC, taking their biggest lead of the day (20-8) as they would cruise to the 2-0 match advantage.
The third set was more evenly matched as the first one was, with
Lauren Paulsen recording a kill to bring MLC within one point (21-20), but that would be the closest the Knights would get, as the Storm won the match off of consecutive kills.
Ella Schlei and
Grace Kieselhorst led the way in kills, each recording six on the day, while
Molly Fitzsimmons led with 10 assists.
Saint Benedict 3, MLC 0
MLC faced off against Saint Benedict in the later match on Saturday around 5 p.m. and the Knights found themselves down double-digits throughout the first set, as the Blazers recorded a team total of 13 kills to open up.
The Knights had trouble bouncing back in the second set as the front row of the Blazers seemed to make things difficult for MLC. Saint Benedict would also have six service aces in the set to power themselves past MLC 25-8.
MLC gave a great effort in the third set, but was ultimately beaten 25-15, resulting in the Blazers' sweep of the Knights.
Paulsen led MLC in digs (9) and kills (5), as Fitzsimmons led the Knights in assists (6) for the second consecutive match.
MLC (2-5) will have another home game on Tuesday, September 12, when they host Buena Vista University. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
