New Ulm, MN - The MLC women's basketball team put together a second consecutive victory in the LSC gymnasium on Monday evening, defeating Macalester
71-67.
MLC lost to the Scots 69-61 in the first game of the season last year as Macalester outscored the Knights 20-11 in the fourth quarter. On Monday, MLC prevented a comeback from the Scots despite Macalester making it interesting in the final seconds. The Knights took a 67-60 lead after a pair of
Wilhelmina Wenz free throws with 36 seconds left. However, Faith Accardo pulled Macalester within two points (69-67) after a 4-point play and another 3-pointer with 13 seconds remaining. Although the lead was threatened, MLC didn't back down, and
Mya Morris calmly knocked down two free throws to give the Knights the 71-67 win.
MLC overcame a first quarter in which they trailed 18-6 after the first 10 minutes. MLC shot much better in the second quarter, shooting 50 percent as they outscored Macalester 23-13 in the period to cut it to 31-29 at halftime.
The Knights began the third quarter on a 14-5 run to take the momentum from the Scots. During the run,
Lydia Feidt and
Ava Stein knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. For the third and fourth quarter, MLC connected on 17 free throws and for the game shot 71 percent to help their case.
MLC gained another solid performance from its backcourt with Morris (23 points, 11 rebounds) and Wenz (16 points, 10 rebounds) collecting double-doubles to give their team a boost. Stein also contributed on the block, totaling 12 points and six boards, while Feidt added 11 points and three steals.
MLC will be back at it again with another home game against Hamline at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19.
