Ripon, WI - The MLC volleyball squad wrapped up its season opening tournament on Saturday with a pair of matches against Aurora (IL) and Saint Mary's (MN). The Knights looked to secure another W in the win column, but were unable to achieve that as they were swept 3-0 in each match.
Aurora 3, MLC 0
In the morning match, Aurora made their presence known with a 25-14 opening set win, but the Knights gave the Spartans a tougher go of it in the middle set before falling 25-20 in it.
Aurora completed the sweep with an efficient final set, where they took it 25-11 and finished with a .368 hitting percentage. Aurora would commit just 13 errors in the match and had a 12-4 advantage in service aces to help their cause.
Ella Walz led MLC with 15 assists in the match, while
Lydia Feidt had the most digs (10). Freshman
Greta Nolte had a solid match and led the Knights with eight kills.
Saint Mary's 3, MLC 0
MLC gave the Cardinals a competitive match in the afternoon contest (27-25, 25-13, 25-20) before Saint Mary's would eventually earn the sweep.Â
The Knights fought hard in the first set as both teams traded off with the lead in the back-and-forth affair.
Hannah Rodmyre knotted things up at 25 apiece late in the set, but a couple of MLC attack errors finished the set in favor of the Cardinals.
After the decisive second set victory for Saint Mary's, the Knights made it close in the final set, but the Cardinals would convert on five kills in their last six points to seal the deal.
For the match, Saint Mary's had a 47-27 edge in kills and had three players finish with double digit kills.
Walz finished with 22 assists to lead the way again for MLC, while
Anna Kieselhorst led the Knights in digs (14) and aces (3). Feidt had a team high in kills (10) and blocks (4) and was named to the All-Tournament Team after compiling 33 kills, 34 digs, and nine blocks in a total of 12 sets played.
MLC (1-3) will be back in action in another tournament starting next Friday, September 5, at Saint Mary's in Winona, MN. There, the Knights will play St. Scholastica at 5 p.m. to start it off.
