Winona, MN - The MLC volleyball team played in the Sugarloaf Classic tournament this weekend, which was hosted by MIAC school Saint Mary's (MN).
The Knights gave a good effort in all three of their matches, but were swept 3-0 to St. Scholastica on Friday and fell 3-0 to Wheaton (IL) and Luther College (IA) 3-1 on Saturday.
St. Scholastica 3, MLC 0
The Saints recorded an impressive hitting percentage of .320 on the way to their sweep of the Knights. In the three sets, St. Scholastica committed just six errors, while MLC committed 24 errors. St. Scholastica won the match 25-16, 25-12, 25-17.
Despite the loss,
Lydia Feidt had a strong game, finishing with 12 kills and 11 digs, while
Ella Walz set up 30 assists for her teammates.
Wheaton 3, MLC 0
In game two of the tournament, Wheaton topped MLC in three sets and had a balanced scoring attack to give them the edge.
Wheaton finished with 38 kills compared to 18 for the Knights.
Anna Kieselhorst led MLC with 12 digs, while Walz racked up 16 assists to pace the Knights in that category.
Luther 3, MLC 1
The final match saw the Knights give their best performance of the tournament, as they fell 25-20,
27-25, 25-21, 28-26.
MLC challenged the Norse in each set and claimed the second one, forcing 10 miscues of Luther. The Knights had opportunities to take another set, but Luther figured out ways to fend MLC off.
Walz once again had a nice match at the setter spot, dishing out 31 assists. Meanwhile, Kieselhorst (14) and Feidt (10) led the Knights in digs, making plays to keep MLC in it throughout.
MLC will play St. Scholastica once more when they go to their final early season tournament at UW-La Crosse next weekend. There, MLC will take on the Saints on Friday, September 12, at 5 p.m.
