MLC brings down Crown to win 1st conference game of the season

New Ulm, MN - The MLC women's basketball team picked up its first UMAC victory of the season with a home win over Crown College 70-56 on Saturday.

The Knights were coming off a tough overtime home loss to Minnesota Morris on Wednesday evening, 80-75. Towards the end of the fourth quarter, the Knights lost Mya Morris to injury. MLC was without its leading scorer on Saturday against the Polars, but her teammates had no trouble getting past Crown, completing the wire-to-wire win.

Throughout all four quarters, MLC shot the ball extremely well, shooting 48.4 percent. The Knights started the game off hot (62.5 percent) and didn't cool down much, shooting 54.55 percent in the final period.

MLC did much of their damage down in low near the basket and took advantage of size mismatches, scoring 50 of their 70 points in the paint. Anna Kieselhorst had the best game of her junior season, just coming off an injury not too long ago. The guard totaled a career-high 21 points, two steals, and five rebounds, while knocking down a pair of 3-pointers. Wilhelmina Wenz was once again on the glass and also collected a career high in rebounds (16) to go along with 11 points and a team-best six assists. Meanwhile, Ava Stein finished with 13 points.

The MLC defense played well and limited the Crown to under 26 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

MLC will now be on the road this coming week when they head to Northwestern for a 5:30 p.m. tip on Wednesday, January 14.
