ST. MICHAEL, Minn. - John Martin carded a pair of birdies and an eagle on his way to a 3-under-par 69 to lead the men's team at the University of Northwestern Invite on Tuesday.

He tied for the lowest round on the course, losing a scorecard playoff to Blu Anderson from UW-Superior, who birdied hole 13 to Martin's par.

Martin, a senior, started on hole 16 and played the first 14 holes of his round bogey free, including going 3-under on the front nine at Fox Hollow Golf Course. Martin said hitting greens in regulation was key.

"The key to the bogey-free streak was hitting my irons on the green within 25 feet," Martin said. "If the irons were off, then hitting good chips and making some clutch putts [was key]."

The highlight of the round came on the 513-yard par 5 fifth hole, which Martin eagled. He left himself about 190 yards in after his tee shot. He stuck the 6-iron approach to just 8 feet.

"The putt was uphill and caught the edge and dropped in," Martin said.

Benjamin Pearson also shot under par on the front nine. He finished the day with a 1-over 73. Luke Latzke and Luke Krauklis were the final two counting scores for the Knights. Latzke shot 79 and Krauklis shot 80.

The team score of 301 was good for fourth place out of 13 teams and also set a program record for lowest 18-hole team score. It broke the previous record by six strokes.

MLC's second team finished 13th. Freshman Ryan Pufahl led that team with an 80.
