NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men's tennis team earned its first win of the season by the final of 5-4 in a match against Minnesota Morris on Wednesday.
The Knights opened the match by taking two of the three doubles contests. The number one team of
Justin Marshall and
Justin Steinke lost 9-7, but the numbers two (
Josh Koelpin and
Philip Schroeder) and three (
Ethan Schultz and
Nicolas Gartner) picked up with wins by the scores of 8-5 and 8-0, respectively.
In singles, the Cougars were able to win matches in each of the top three spots, but the back half of the MLC line-up came up strong to secure the win. Koelpin won in number four singles 6-2, 6-2. Gartner won his number five match 6-3, 6-4, and Schultz also won his number six match in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
MLC's win moved its record to 1-9 overall and 1-3 in UMAC competition. UMM fell to 0-7 on the season and 0-5 in conference play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, April 16, when they travel to Northwestern for a match scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
