NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC volleyball team is set to play at Northwestern (Minn.) in Wednesday's semifinal match of the UMAC Postseason Tournament.
The Knights advanced to this game thanks to a thrilling five-set win over St. Scholastica. MLC fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 in the match, and ultimately held off one final CSS rally to win the fifth and final set 16-14.
MLC has faced Northwestern twice this season, and the UMAC-champion Eagles have come away with a pair of three-set wins. In those matches, UNW has hit .436 and .351, respectively, and the Knights had trouble slowing down reigning UMAC Player of the Year Lindsey Peterson, who recorded 36 kills and only three errors in the two matches.
The Knights and Eagles faced off in the semifinals of last season's UMAC Postseason Tournament, with UNW winning in three sets on the way to a tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Knights enter tonight's match feeling good after smashing a season-high 80 kills in Monday's win. That is the most kills by an MLC team since the 2006 season. Senior
Jade St. Germaine finished with a career-high 26 kills, which were the most by an MLC player since the 2013 season.
Kira Grev,
Rylee Weisensel and
Moriah Hackbarth each had big days, as well, with at least 14 kills, while setters
Emily Byhardt and Haley Stade each set new career-highs with 37 and 31 assists, respectively.
