LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The Martin Luther College women's tennis team earned a split in a UMAC doubleheader at Lifetime Fitness Center on Saturday. MLC dropped the opener 6-3 against St. Scholastica, but won the second match 7-2 against Bethany Lutheran.
CSS 6, MLC 3 (
RESULTS)
The Knights battled against the conference-leading Saints, but fell 6-3 in the first match of the day.
MLC got on the board with a point in doubles thanks to an 8-3 win by the number one team of
Anna Hemmelman and
Rachel Riediger. The Saints were able to secure the other two points by the scores of 8-5 and 8-1.
Hemmelman and Riediger continued their strong play with singles wins, but the Saints were able to win the match thanks to straight-set wins in the other four matches. Hemmelman won her number one singles match 6-1, 6-2, while Riediger won her match in three sets by the scores of 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (10-3).
MLC 7, BLC 2 (
RESULTS)
MLC came back after the opening match defeat to top Bethany Lutheran 7-2 Saturday night.
The Knights won two of the three doubles matches, with the team of Hemmelman and Riediger winning 8-3, and the number three team of
Sophia Birner and
Ella Loersch winning their match 8-1.
MLC secured the team win by taking five of the six singles matches, with all five wins coming in straight sets. Hemmelman won her number one singles match 6-1, 6-0 to remain unbeaten (5-0) in singles play this season. After losing her first two singles matches of the season, Hemmelman has won nine of her last ten, including each of her last seven.
The Knights moved to 5-7 overall and 3-2 in UMAC play following the split. They will return to action on Tuesday, April 24, when they travel to Crown College.
