MORRIS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College men closed Friday's opening day of the UMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in second place.
The Knights recorded 103.5 points on Friday, surpassing last season's two-day total of 94.5 points. MLC trails first-place UW-Superior's total of 114 points, with University of Minnesota Morris in third place with 42 points.
Carson Oestreich entered the day with the eighth-fastest 200 Meter Dash time in the conference this spring, but shaved nearly one full second off his previous best performance to win the event in a time of 22.36. Oestreich also qualified for Saturday's 100 Meter Dash finals with the top time of 10.94.
The Knights' recorded a number of top finishes across the track events on Friday, including four top-seven finishes in the 800 Meters.
Josiah Loersch (2:01.22) led the way in third place, followed by
Nathan Pausma (2:01.83),
Micah Schibbelhut (2:03.98) and
Luke Wegner (2:04.71). Those four also combined to finish third in the 4x800 Meter Relay to close the day.
Ryan Maertz (10:26.07),
Caleb Lash (10:28.55) and
Camden Sulzle (10:50.92) finished third, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase.
Zach Scheuerlein continued his late-season surge by taking second place in the Javelin with a throw of 47.32 meters.
Gustav Wenz (45.6 meters),
Caleb Foelske (45.2 meters) and
Zachary Gregorius (39.42 meters) finished fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively. Foelske also added a sixth-place finish in the Hammer Throw as he broke his own school mark with a throw of 40.6 meters.
Jonas Landwehr and
Seth Veers each scored points in multiple events. Landwehr took third in the 400 Meter Hurdles and fifth in the Long Jump, while Veers finished fifth in the 400 Meter Hurdles and fourth in the Pole Vault.
Schibbelhut led four MLC athletes in the Pole Vault with a top height of 3.45 meters, good for second place.
Caleb Little and
Andrew Wietzke also scored top-seven finishes in the event.
